If “Annabelle” failed to scare the guts of you the first time around, well, give the possessed doll a second chance because it’s ready to scare you again.
According to Variety, “The Conjuring” spin-off film will be getting a sequel via New Line Cinema, the same studio that produced “A Nightmare On Elm Street” franchise.
Starring Annabelle Wallis and Ward Horton, the story in “Annabelle” set in California in 1969. It was inspired by a story of a doll named Annabelle, which was alleged by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren to be haunted. The doll is the same doll that briefly appeared in “The Conjuring”.
Though the film received negative responses from the critics, it grossed over USD250 million worldwide on a USD6.5 million budget. It was the 14th highest-grossing horror/supernatural film in the US and Canada.
Gary Dauberman, whose writing credits include Universal’s “Crime of the Century” and Ryuhei Kitamura’s “Vessels”, will return to write the script for the sequel.
No word on whether director John R. Leonetti will return to helm the sequel, but Warner Bros. has reportedly begun seaching for a potential replacement. James Wan, who directed “The Conjuring” and produced “Annabelle” alongside Peter Safaran, has not been attached to produce the sequel yet.
