#AngryBirds: Movie Will Explain Why The Bird-Pig War Exists

We have to admit, the upcoming “Angry Birds” feature film actually looks pretty good. That is, of course, judging from the new movie stills and the plot details.

Entertainment Weekly recently revealed a total of 3 new movie stills, offering us a first look at the villainous green pig antagonists from the “Angry Birds” film.

For those who are not in the know, “Angry Birds”, created by Finnish computer game developer Rovio Entertainment, first made its way onto our mobile devices in 2009. It has been downloaded more than 3 billion times since its inception. It became a global pop culture phenomenon due to its successful combination of addictive gameplay, comical style, and low price.

The success of the game led to various versions of “Angry Birds” being created for personal computers and gaming consoles, a market for merchandise featuring its characters, spin-offs, TV series, and feature film based on the franchise. Its sequel was released on 30th July 2015.

Sony Pictures Angry Birds

Sony Pictures won the worldwide distribution rights to the animated film back in 2013.

It was then announced that Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast member Jason Sudeikis is voicing Red, the leading character of the film. Red is described to be one of the “beaked denizens on an all-bird island paradise”. However, he’s also a “misfit” as his feather gets ruffled very easily.

“He’s a curmudgeon,” director Clay Kaytis said.

He added:

We knew we had to find an actor who could say these things and still be charming, and that was Jason.

Sudeikis’ character is joined by a pair of birds with similar anger-management issues. The yellow hyperactive speedy Chuck is voiced by “Frozen” star Josh Gad while the volatile Bomb is voiced by Danny McBride.

But here comes the inevitable questions: What could the movie possibly be about and why are the birds so angry?

Producer John Cohen (of “Despicable Me” fame) explained, “This is the origin story for how that conflict came to exist between birds and little green piggies.”

Thus, we will see the 3 misfits (Red, Chuck, and Boom) fighting against a group of green piggies that infiltrated their nest. The snouted intruders are led by their porcine representative, Leonard (voiced by Bill Hader).

The movie is joined by a plethora of SNL cast members including Kate McKinnon, Keegan-Michael Key, Tony Hale, Ike Barinholtz, Hannibal Buress, Cristela Alonzo, and Jillian Bell. “Game of Thrones” actor Peter Dinklage will voice “The Mighty Eagle”, the most powerful bird in the Angry Birds universe while Maya Rudolph will voice Mother Hen of the flock, Mathilda.

It was reported that Latin musician Romeo Santos and YouTube stars Smosh (Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla) also joined the voice cast of the film for unspecified roles.

Angry Birds Movie Characters

Kaytis is directing “The Angry Birds Movie” with Fergal Reilly, who previously worked as a storyboard artist for “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”. The film, which will mark Reilly and Kaytis’ directorial debuts, will be based on a script written by “The Simpsons” Jon Vitti.

“The Angry Birds Movie” is due to be released in Malaysia on 30th June 2016.
