Most people aren’t too worried when they catch a flight. However, a recent event involving an airplane at KLIA might have left some passengers a little more paranoid, especially after its engine allegedly exploded.

Reportedly, a plane had been taking off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 1 in Sepang, Selangor yesterday (4th February) when misfortune struck. One of the aircraft’s engines supposedly exploded, leaving its passengers frightened. Thankfully, no one was injured.

The incident was allegedly recorded by one of the passengers on the airplane who later uploaded it to her Xiao Hong Shu (小红书) account. According to them, their flight to Sibu, Sarawak had been about to take off when passengers heard an explosion.

The passenger claimed they hadn’t thought too much of it until a fellow passenger started praying and reminded them of the Saudia Flight 163 crash. “I rushed forward and saw smoke coming from the plane’s engine,” they recalled. “The captain told everyone to calm down, and police cars, fire trucks and water trucks responded (to the incident).”

Said incident delayed the passengers for half an hour before the airline company reportedly arranged a new flight for them, claiming the new airplane was better. Although the accident held the passenger up, they shared they were simply grateful they could return safely home for the New Year.

Netizens were quick to share their thoughts about the accident. Some theorised the explosion could have been caused by a bird crashing into the engine. Others were thankful the airplane had not taken off before the explosion as the consequences would be disastrous.

China Press investigated the issue and claimed they did find a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sibu, scheduled to take off yesterday afternoon at 1.30pm. The flight was listed as “returned”. But, the netizen who uploaded the footage has not responded to further inquiries.

Additionally, a spokesperson from the KLIA police claimed that the bureau had not received any report about an airplane’s engine exploding as of 10pm yesterday. However, they did confirm there had been an accident with an aircraft, and its flight was postponed from 1.30pm to 4.30pm today (5th February) in the afternoon.

Well, we’re certainly glad the passengers and staff on the flight are safe despite the unexpected and worrying incident. Hopefully, their subsequent flights won’t be as eventful in the future.
