Sarawak is taking it to the skies with its own airline – AirBorneo! State Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the airline’s establishment following the formal acquisition of MASwings.
AirBorneo was unveiled during the Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) signing on Wednesday (12th February 2025) between the Sarawak government and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG). With this agreement, Sarawak would officially acquire MASwings, owing the airline with zero liability.

Here’s a few fun facts about the airline:
The Airline Will Take 18 Months To Transition
Following the signing, the airline would undergo an 18-month transition before rebranding as AirBorneo to ensure smooth operations and minimal disruptions. The transition will include transferring all MASwings assets, including staff and aircraft in Sabah, and a newly proposed ATR aircraft with updated cabin configurations.
AirBorneo Will Expand Its Fleet With Bigger Jets
Sarawak will also be free to negotiate new aircraft acquisitions and expand its fleet. AirBorneo currently operates ATR aircraft, but discussions are underway to introduce jets for longer-haul routes. The livery will also be redesigned from the MASwings’ existing green scheme to reflect Sarawak’s identity.

More International Routes Will Be Introduced In The Future
As for routes, the new carrier will continue to serve Rural Air Services (RAS), but Abang Johari confirms plans to expand to regional and international routes. Operational expansion plans include key destinations, like Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Jakarta. The Indonesian city was identified as a priority to accommodate increasing tourist arrivals and facilitate the potential for medical tourism.
AirBorneo’s Routes To Focus On Tourism and Economic Growth
The Sarawak Premier said AirBorneo’s strategy will focus on tourism and business connectivity. He also mentioned that the acquisition could help Sarawak’s economy since reliable air connectivity is crucial for attracting investments, facilitating logistics and supporting local businesses. With the state having its own airline, businesses, especially those in the handicraft and e-commerce industry, can reach international markets efficiently.

Many netizens have reacted positively to the announcement. However, some urged AirBorneo to improve its services and maintain affordable ticket prices. What are your thoughts on this?
