AirAsia X, AirAsia Group’s long-haul, low-cost affiliate carrier, has announced that they’ll be flying 4 times weekly direct to Wuhan, China from Kuala Lumpur. The maiden flight is scheduled for 22nd March 2017.

Currently, AirAsia operates daily flights to Wuhan only from Kota Kinabalu.

Chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail said the company is the largest foreign carrier into China and the destination is set to receive 32 weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Bangkok, and Phuket.

“China is a segment that continues to record encouraging progressive performance annually and remains the focus of AirAsia X’s network expansion strategy. Wuhan will soon be a virtual hub for the AirAsia and AirAsia X Groups. We are committed to maintaining growth, while developing innovative products and services,” he said in a statement on today (Monday, 16th January).

For the uninitiated, Wuhan (武汉) is the capital of Hubei province in China and the most populous city in Central China. A major transportation hub with dozens of railways, roads, and expressways passing through the city and connecting to other major cities in the country, Wuhan is sometimes referred to as the “Chicago of China”.

Wuhan is divided by the Yangtze and Han rivers, and contains many lakes and parks, including the expansive, picturesque East Lake. Nearby, the Hubei Provincial Museum displays relics from the Warring States period, including the Marquis Yi of Zeng’s coffin and bronze musical bells from his 5th-century B.C. tomb.

The AirAsia Group currently operates 409 weekly flights from various Asean cities across 45 routes to 17 destinations in China. As part of the Wuhan route announcement, AirAsia X is offering one-way promotional fares from as low as RM199. Hit up http://bit.ly/ViSitWuhan to book your flight!
