Chinese actor Nie Yuan (聂远) is known for playing a stern emperor on the hit television drama, ”Story of Yanxi Palace (延禧攻略)” – but could he be just as stern at home as he is on the show? Recently, the actor was trending on Weibo after a report came out that he pays his wife a hefty monthly allowance as long as she follows every order.
The 46-year-old actor married his wife, actress Qin Ziyue (秦子越), in 2014, and the couple have two children together. After marrying, Qin Ziyue retired from the entertainment industry to focus on being a housewife and caring for the children. Nie Yuan became the sole breadwinner, providing both his family and his in-laws with his acting career.
The star’s home life was recently trending on Weibo, bringing up mixed reactions from netizens. Apparently, Niu Yuan is treated like an emperor at home because his wife handles all the housework, and his in-laws also live with him to help with cooking, leaving him with no housework whatsoever. Rumour has it that the actor also demands a warm meal every time he returns home, and the rest of the family will only begin eating once he gives the okay.
However, as a “payment” for her hard work, Nie Yuan reportedly gives his wife a monthly allowance of 3 million yuan (approximately RM1.96 million). He also pays for all the monthly expenses, including their home and the bills. Despite this, netizens couldn’t help but criticise the actor for how he treats his wife and his “macho” way of thinking.
Many lament that the star still believes in traditional roles, treating his wife like a servant merely because he’s the breadwinner. Others pity Qin Ziyue, saying she must feel tired because she has to obey her husband’s every order. However, some said the trade-off is worth it because Nie Yuan is rarely home due to his packed schedule, so Qin Ziyue won’t have to deal with him that often.
Of course, these are merely rumours, so it’s unconfirmed whether this is how the actor truly is at home – but would you accept an RM1.96 million allowance if it meant obeying your partner’s orders?
