“A Country Of Small Island Karens”: Comedian Ronny Chieng’s Remark Angers Singaporeans

The thing about comedy is that the joke does not always land. This was definitely proven by Jocelyn Chia when she angered many with her insensitive MH370 tragedy joke last year. Numerous comedians, including Malaysia’s Nigel Ng, have also been cancelled because of their humour and it looks like another one might be joining the party.

Over the weekend, Malaysian-born comedian Ronny Chieng posted on his Instagram story about his opinion on current affairs in Singapore. According to the “Kung Fu Panda 4” star, he believes that the only Singaporean allowed to speak on these matters is former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

“[Singaporeans] are just a country of small island Karens with main character syndrome who literally think they have all the answers despite having zero perspective on the world. Great chilli crab though,” he wrote. Obviously, the IG story did not necessarily sit well with the people of the neighbouring country as it was then reposted on a Singapore subreddit page by reddot4eva.

As seen in the screenshots below, the post sparked an online discussion among netizens, mostly Singaporeans. Some called him out for his insensitivity while claiming that it’s not surprising that Malaysians would make such a statement about Singapore. Others suspected that the Johor-born star was just rage-baiting for more engagement.

A few joined in on the joke by portraying the “Karen” character and “demanded” to speak to Ronny’s manager about his statement on IG. There were also those who actually agreed with the 38-year-old’s points but expressed that they didn’t like the tone. A few suggested that people should not take the “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” actor’s statement seriously as he does comedy for a living.

At the time of writing, it is currently unknown if Ronny Chieng, who grew up in both Singapore and the US, has responded to his IG story going viral on Reddit but after a quick check, we can confirm that the user who reposted the story on the social site got their account suspended. Do you agree with Ronny’s opinion on the topic?
