Not all films are designed to entertain. Sometimes, a few mindless violent scenes would be featured in an action film to shock and disgust its viewers.
In an effort to prevent Indians youths in Malaysia from getting involved in crime, Malaysia Hindu Sangam president Datuk R.S. Mohan Shan said that violent scenes in Tamil films should be censored.
In a report by The Star Online, Mohan Shan told Bernama that the violent scenes should be cut from a film as the Indian youths in the country would try to recreate the sequences or copy their favourite heroes’ violent actions in real-life.
When contacted by Bernama, he said:
The violent actions in Tamil films are for entertainment purpose and not applicable in real life. But our Indian youths are easily influenced by the films.
He also provided a few examples of violent murder cases in Malaysia, citing the gruesome killing of Attorney-General’s Chambers officer Anthony Kevin Morais and the Tapah murders where 4 individuals were burned to ashes and bones.
“There are violent killing scenes in Tamil films which prompt youths to be involved in activities that contravene the law,” he added, before urging the Film Censorship Board of Malaysia to take into account these matters and control such films in light of the social ills taking place in the country.
Malaysian Crime Prevention Awareness Board president Datuk Seri Dr Saharuddin Awang Yahya echoed with Mohan’s views, saying that the matter on films containing violence should be taken seriously. He explained that they could contribute to an unhealthy culture, adding that any film produced must have a positive message.
However, a former policeman named R. Karniappan said that THE percentage of Tamil films contributing to social problems in the country is small. According to Bernama, Karniappan used to be involved in crime investigations in the country.
Having served in the police force for 36 years, he said:
Not many Indian youths are influenced by the violent actions in films despite often viewing such films.
