US-based Malaysian singer-songwriter Zee Avi is on a roll.
Just 2 weeks ago, Zee mesmerised fans by contributing her beautiful vocals to “Sudi Menyanyi“, a song that she collaborated with Gamaliel Audrey Cantika from Indonesia and Up Dharma Down from Philippines for Oreo’s #Wonderfilled campaign.
Today, the singer serenaded us again with a new track that she sang for “OlaBola”, an upcoming local movie helmed by director Chiu Keng Guan.
Set in the 70s, “Ola Bola” is touted as the “biggest football movie in Malaysian film history”. It will be Chiu’s first feature film since the massive success of 2014’s “The Journey“.
A self-proclaimed footaball enthuasist, Chiu said the movie will centre on “a multicultural team of Malaysian footballers struggling to overcome personal and collective hardships together as a team and create the most triumphant zero to hero story”.
Zee said that she agreed to sing for the movie after Chiu contacted her through Facebook chat. She made her way back to Kuala Lumpur to meet the director and came up with the song almost immediately after watching several scenes of the movie.
Not only did she sing for the song, she also played the guitar and was involved in the music arrangement. Chiu apparently approved the song without even altering its music or lyrics because it perfectly captures the movie’s spirit.
Titled “Arena Cahaya”, the song was co-produced by Zee and her fellow US-based singer Rendra Zawawi.
In a press statement, Zee said:
The song is written in 2 languages, Malay and English, to reflect a country like Malaysia that is made up of diverse cultures.
“It is my sincere hope that through this song, Malaysians will be brought together by what unites us in harmony, and be reminded of the moments when we fought against all odds towards a common goal,” she added.
Premiered on all the major radio stations in Malaysia today, the song has its own lyrics video on movie giant Astro Shaw’s official YouTube channel, which you can watch below:
No further details regarding the movie are revealed, but it is expected to arrive in theatres sometime in early 2016.
