When it comes to Chinese New Year, there’s a lot of food that comes to mind. From the much loved Bakkwa (similar to jerky) to pineapple jam tarts, peanuts and much more, CNY always promises a veritable feast! But there is one another food that stands out and that is the Yee Sang (or Lou Sang) aka the Prosperity Toss.
Curiously enough, Yee Sang is very much a South East Asian thing. So it’s no real surprise that not every knows about it, including Hong Kong artist Sammi Cheng Sau Man (郑秀文)! In fact, netizens recently got a chuckle watching her and her staff ‘toss’ the Yee Sang!
The Hong Kong singer and actress uploaded her attempt at ‘tossing’ the Yee Sang on her Instagram today (30th January). The video showed Sammi standing with her staff as they cautiously stirred the Yee Sang in its box. The group cheered as they stirred the noodles before debating about how it was done.
“(Scrape) a meal,” Sammi jokingly captioned afterwards. She also shared in her tags that they weren’t sure what they were doing. “We didn’t know how to pick it up properly and it turned into a (dish) of fried noodles,” she wrote. Still, they did manage to complete ‘tossing’ their Yee Sang.
Their actions sent local netizens into fits of laughter in the comments. “Toss it a little higher, (and) say auspicious things. (Usually tossing) Yee Sang is not so refined,” one comment read. Another pointed out that they needed to add in all the ingredients before tossing it high. “What you guys are doing is just mixing, not tossing,” they laughed. One netizen even pointed out it was the tidiest Lou Sang they had ever seen.
But, others simply applauded their hard work. They were also content with how happy the group had been. “Just eat it whether it is ‘tossed’ or ‘fried’,” one recommended. Another commented that they were happy the group seemed to enjoy the dish.
Well, we too would like to wish Sammi and her staff well as they welcome the year of the rabbit! Perhaps they will ‘toss’ the Yee Sang next year instead.
