If you were an avid bar hopper or club dancer pre-Covid, then the lifting of restrictions and reopening of clubs in the recent months has probably been the highlight of your 2022. Now, there’s nothing stopping you from once again exploring the bar and club scene that embodies KL city nightlife.
From whiskey to gin, the list of spirits and cocktail drinks you can drink on a night out is never-ending. But if you’re looking for something more oriental, sake is always the classy way to go. And what better place to truly enjoy Japanese alcohol than at Sake Sake at The Roof, the first Asian only drinks and Sake on tap bar in Malaysia?
What’s in a name?
It goes without saying that Sake Sake carries a large array of sake bottles for you to choose from. Whether you’re looking for something to warm you up or something chilled for a night out with your friends, the selection is basically never-ending.
On our visit, they recommended us their Fusozuru Tokubetsu Junmai bottle, priced at RM258, which can be served either cold or warm. Of course, we had to give both temperatures a go to really see if the sake was up our alley.
To put it simply, the sake was smooth. It was rich in flavour but also not too strong that we couldn’t drink it, either. While both the chilled and warm variations were equally as good, we really enjoyed the warm sake and how it brought out the aromatic flavour in the sake even more. Paired with the night city skyline view and ambient lighting, Sake Sake is definitely the perfect bar to go with friends after a long day at work.
Thai & Japanese Fusion Eats
But don’t let the name of the bar fool you – Sake Sake also offers an assortment of Thai and Japanese fusion dishes you can dig into during your visit. From various maki rolls to classic Thai dishes like Pad Thai, we were quite impressed with what they had to offer, food department-wise.
Going in, we thought they would only have Japanese food on their menu, but their Thai selection proved to be one of our favourites. In particular, we had their Tom Yam teapot, where they poured Tom Yam soup from – you guessed it – a teapot! Not only was it uber cute, but the soup and all the seafood bits inside the teacup tasted great as well.
If you’re as much of an avid drinker as we are, then you’d understand the need to snack when you’re out drinking with your friends. While usually people tend to get fries to match their alcohol, Sake Sake’s skewers were the perfect companion to all their drinks.
We gave their Pork Belly and Asparagus skewers a try, and they were perfect for filling you up while you’re a little bit tipsy! But what really caught our attention was their Smoked Duck and Mango skewers. While we were taken aback by the combo at first, the sweet and savoury combination of the mango and smoked duck was just too good.
A Beautiful View & Great Music
Sitting in front of their larger-than-life windows, we got an amazing view of the city night skyline of KLCC as we drank the night away. The place is somewhat more intimate than your usual bar, with many cushioned and sofa seats and high tables for people to sit and drink at.
After 10pm, they also bring in a DJ to liven up the place, and, can we just say, that the music was amazing? We often found ourselves dancing and singing along to some of our favourite 2000s Kpop and R&B hits during our visit. Plus, their Manga- and Japanese-inspired decorations and lighting really made the whole place just that much more livelier.
So, the next time you’re looking for somewhere intimate that serves great food, good music and even better sake, make sure you drop by Sake Sake at the Rooftop for an experience you really can’t get anywhere else! Where else can you go for your Japanese alcohol fix?
And, if you’re looking to party, The Roof is having a party on the 25th of June to celebrate their official relaunch and 9th anniversary! Alongside Sake Sake, you can get freebies from all the restaurants along The Roof including free cocktails, vouchers, and more.
