A new year usually signifies a new beginning. This has never been truer for controversial Malaysian singer-rapper Namewee (Wee Meng Chee, 黄明志).
2021 wasn’t easy for Namewee. The singer was facing severe consequences after releasing his controversial movie “Babi”. There was even a warrant for his arrest! However, this year, Namewee came back to a pleasant surprise.
Today (11th January), the singer announced his touchdown in the country. “Hi Malaysia!” he greeted via his socials. “Finally back to (my) homeland. Long time to see!” Namewee stated that it had taken quite a while for him to get through procedures to enter Malaysia.
There weren’t many people, but there were a lot of steps. “It took (me) an hour and a half,” he said. But there was a surprise waiting for him at the end of it. “While crossing customs, I suddenly found (out) that my “international warrant” was lifted,” he shared. “What? Oh yeah, finally don’t need to (get) caught.”
Namewee spent the last year attempting to clear his name after the “Babi” fiasco. He returned in April and promised to surrender himself to the police as soon as he finished his quarantine. He kept his word and thankfully wasn’t arrested. Namewee later returned to Taiwan at the end of July to continue working but there was no clear end to the scandal. However, his troubles are officially over!
The singer is likely going through another round of quarantine now but he’ll probably be busy once he’s out. After all, his film “Nasi Lemak 1.0” will be released in cinemas on 27th January, shortly before Chinese New Year. So, there’ll be plenty for him to look forward to this trip home!
