You may have tasted durian in desserts and cakes in the past, but have you tried the king of fruits served on a pizza?
If you’re a fan of pizza and durian, then we can’t think of a better treat to satisfy your cravings. And the best part? You don’t even have to wait till June for the start of durian season!
When Tino’s Pizza Café in Singapore first introduced this new exotic dish on 1st April 2017, everyone assumed it was an April’s Fool joke (can you blame them?). Turns out, the family-friendly restaurant wasn’t fooling around at all.
The cafe, which serves authentic Italian food, has 2 new durian-flavoured pizzas on its menu: the D24 Pizza (SGD16.90) and the Mao Shan Wang Pizza (SGD21.90). So what’s the difference between the 2 options, you ask? Is one better than the other?
According to The Smart Local writer, Choo Hui Zhi, eating the D24 Pizza came close to eating the real spiky fruit itself. “Thick crust pizzas are usually a hit or a miss, and I usually find myself sticking to the thin crust alternative to avoid disappointment and a total waste of crust. So it was a pleasant surprise to find that Tino’s Pizza’s thick crust was buttery, airy, and not too dense. And there was just the right proportion of topping to crust for the durian flavours to make their red carpet entrance. At the end of it, no crust was wasted – so that’s saying something,” he wrote.
As for the Mao Shan Wang Pizza, Choo felt that it had the unique combination of sweet and salty, adding that “the base of this pizza is almost completely covered with a generous layer of cheese and durian“.
Tino’s Pizza Café isn’t the first to introduce durian pizza though. Singapore’s Godfather Pizza, Sarawak’s 900 Inn Café, as well as China’s Blue and Brown had previously offered this dish. In 2015, Pizza Hut attempted the same idea but end up scrapping it.
In case you’re interested, Tino’s Pizza Café 3 outlets in Singapore are located at Centrepoint, Tiong Bahru Plaza, and Resorts World Sentosa.
