This coming Saturday (19th March 2016), head on over to the capital’s Medan Pasar for a fun-filled day of activities celebrating a diverse mix of cultures of Southeast Asia.
If you’ve always wanted to taste cuisines from various ethnic groups, you’d be happy to know that the food bazaar will be introducing Melanau, Peranakan, Thai, Nepalese, Vietnamese, Philippines, and Indonesian cuisine fused with Malaysian flavours. That’s quite a treat for all you food lovers, no?
Aptly titled “Sama-Sama” (the Malay word for together), the “Sama-Sama Food Fair”, organised by Think City and DBKL with labDNA, revolves around the theme of inclusivity and celebrating diversity. “So from young to old, the curious and the intrigued, we’re expecting everybody from locals to tourists who drop by,” said Sarah Amer of labDNA.
“Medan Pasar is a public square which has been underutilised in Kuala Lumpur. Prior to this we have hosted Buy Nothing Day, celebrated at the last Saturday of every month where the public consumer awareness and Malam Wayang, with a wayang kulit troupe from Machang, Kelantan to celebrate the new year,” added Amer.
In addition to the food fair, there will also 4 free cooking workshop sessions available during “Sama-Sama”. “The workshop conductors are mainly practitioners within their community who are passionate about sharing their knowledge of their culture with the public. These are people who are running great initiatives, such as Garden To Table, to safeguards of heritage dishes such as Sarang Cookery’s Kerabu Bok Mee workshop which is a Peranakan rarity,” explained Amer.
After thronging through the food fair, watch community dances and cultural performances by the Hands of Hope Choir – a choir of refugee children, as well as traditional dances from Nepalese, Sabah, and Sarawak tribes, The Venopian Solitude, and more. If you have time to spare, there will also be a batik workshop, a music production workshop, and a free art jam session with artist Sharina Shahrin.
Aside from the batik-making workshop (which requires a RM15 fee), all other workshops are free of charge. To reserve a spot, email sarah@labDNA.com for the cooking workshop, mgmt@akhyla.com for the music production workshop, and sharina@everydaystudios.net for the art jam.
