The Lunar New Year is just around the corner and we bet many of you have received or given out some oranges to your neighbours and loved ones. If you didn’t know, oranges along with tangerines are common gifts during this time of year because it symbolise good fortune and happiness.

With that being said, there are instances where the fruits turn out to be spoiled. Thankfully, this 99 Speedmart staff took the initiative to check an entire box of oranges herself before selling it to a customer.

A few days ago, Facebook user Johan Irwan Kamarozaman posted a story of what he experienced during his shopping trip at his local 99 Speedmart. The CEO of LEAP Integrated Solutions was buying a box of oranges and when he placed the item at the checkout counter, the cashier asked for his permission to open the box so she could examine the oranges.

“She asked if she could take a look to make sure that there were no spoiled ones. Whenever I buy a box, there’s usually a couple of spoiled oranges which is not uncommon but customers would be the ones to face the consequences. I salute this staff for taking the initiative to check cause there was indeed one spoiled orange and she replaced it with a good one. Kudos to 99 Speedmart!” he wrote.

The post has been getting a lot of attention from netizens who all praised the supermarket brand and staff as they’ve experienced the same thing at other outlets. Some claimed that this was standard procedure at not only 99 Speedmart but for shops everywhere to check the items before selling them unless the customers themselves choose not to.

Regardless if it is a standard procedure or not, it’s still good that the customer’s oranges were properly checked to prevent anyone from getting food poisoning. As mentioned by Johan Irwan Kamarozaman at the end of his post, one of the ways to know if the fruits are spoiled is to check the bottom of the box for traces of brown-coloured liquid.
