Kuala Lumpur’s cafe scene is booming and it does not seem to be slowing down. There are plenty of cafes around town, but if you’re like us, then you probably have a go-to cafe that you and your friends always hang out at. So why not visit a different place for a change of scenery?

Luckily for you, we’ve done the legwork and have come up with a list of new cafes in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya that you should explore this week.

Check ’em out 🙂

1. Cafe Atas59

Source: TimeOut KL

Formerly known as Lorem Ipsum, Cafe Atas59 is situated above Dr. Chai’s Dental Clinic along Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar. Decorated with colourful paintings and exposed walls, half of the spacious hipster hideout is actually art space. Besides caffeinated drinks, teas, and juices, beer lovers would be delighted to know that Cafe Atas59 also offers a range of imported craft beers (i.e. pale ales).

Note: If you’re into art, the cafe also offers art jam sessions and various workshops.

  • Address: 59-1, Jalan Bangkung, Taman Bandaraya, 59100 Kuala Lumpur
  • Business hours: 8am – 7pm (Monday – Friday); 10am – 7pm (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Tel: 03-2201 6969
  • Facebook

2. Zǎo: Breakfast Anytime

Source: Burpple

Zǎo: Breakfast Anytime in Petaling Jaya is a Taiwanese-style breakfast spot that specialises in toast sandwiches, homemade cold-pressed juices, and coffee. Aside from the typical egg and cheese sandwiches, Zǎo (which is also the pinyin for “morning” in Mandarin) is probably best known for its Korean Kimchi Porky sandwich. Spicy and tangy, the Korean-inspired sandwich is definitely a great option to kickstart your day 🙂

  • Address: 50, Jln 19/3, Seksyen 19, 46300 Petaling Jaya
  • Business hours: 6am – 3pm (Monday to Friday, closed on Wednesdays); 8am – 4pm (Saturday and Sunday)

Made with coconut milk or nut-based milks (i.e. cashew nut, almonds), Kind Kones’ delicious range of ice creams are all free from dairy, refined sugar, and preservatives. As one of the first vegan ice cream makers in Malaysia, the new dessert joint is founded by Serina S. Bajaj, who also owns Raisin’ The Roof, a vegan restaurant. From dark chocolate to cinnamon toast, Kind Kones features over 20 ice cream flavours and other dairy-free snacks such as raw cakes as well as chocolate balls.

Inspired by Australia’s cafe culture, The Other Half is the perfect place for a Sunday brunch with family and friends. The newly-opened TTDI eatery is co-founded by Eugene Lee, who worked as a barista at Melbourne’s Operator25 cafe, and their vivid fusion menu is put together by Brazilian chef Guilherme Hayama. Be sure to snap a photo with their Instagram-worthy crossword-themed wall while you’re there!

  • Address: 2-1 Greens Terrace, Jalan Wan Kadir 3, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 60000 Kuala Lumpur
  • Business hours: 7:30am – 5:30pm (Monday to Friday); 9am – 5:30pm (Saturday and Sunday)

5. Whip Up

Known for their strong coffee and attractive sweet treats, Whip Up is a pastel pink gem located along Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah in Pudu. The cafe is probably one of the few dessert spots in town that allows patrons to build their own tiramisu. For those of you who are craving for something spicy, we hear that they serve a mean plate of nasi lemak with curry chicken!

Chocolate lovers, there’s a new artisanal chocolate-themed cafe in MyTOWN! From ice creams to drinks, to brownies, The Dark Gallery serves all things chocolate and they only use the finest grade single origin chocolate from Madagascar, Ecuador, Tanzania, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Venezuela. Although the Ice Cream Waffle and Chocolate Rhapsody are the shop’s best sellers, we can’t seem to get enough of their frozen S’mores 🙂

Note: The Dark Gallery recently opened an outlet at Millenia Walk, Singapore.
