6 Shows To Watch Based On Your Favourite Kuihs

Colourful, sweet, bite-sized, and an essential in Malaysian celebrations, kuihs have become a special part of everyday life. As we indulge in the festive celebrations this Raya season with the warm company of family, friends and nenek’s homemade Kuih Siput, here are 6 shows to watch on Netflix, based on your favourite festive staples.

1. Batang buruk – “Nana Tanjung”

This addictive milky spring roll pastry brings back childhood memories, reminiscent of the classic comedies we would enjoy with our family during movie nights. Our all-time favourite has to be “Nana Tanjung”, a goofy tale of 3 sisters rekindling their father’s love life in hopes of being with the men of their choices.

2. Apam Balik – “Syif Malam Raya”

Thin and crispy, or thick and fluffy, we love them all! It’s sweet and corny, just like how some of us would tackle our high-school crush. Learn some tricks on how to get a girl with it from “Syif Malam Raya”! This slapstick horror-comedy follows two friends who are assigned to deliver a dead body on Raya eve, with unexpected creepy surprises along the way.

3. Kuih Sarang – “Girlfriend Kontrak”

Just like the Kuih Sarang, love can be sweet yet frail, yet we can never have enough. Experience some sweet feels and love-hate emotions in “Girlfriend Kontrak”, as a woman agrees to pose as a fake girlfriend for a big-shot developer in order to save her village’s firefly habitat.

4. Tart Nenas – “Once Upon A Time”

Life is not fully lived without tasting some sweet and sour moments, just like the taste of Tart Nenas. No other perfect movie that resonates this other than “Once Upon A Time”, which tells the story of a group of kids set out to form a soccer team for a local tournament to compete against more experienced opponents. Experience life’s ups and downs with these strong-willed boys as they fight their way through tough training in order to achieve their goals.

5. Biskut Cornflake – “Paskal”

Studies have suggested people eat almost twice as many snacks when watching an action-packed show. Complement the active jaw exercise of munching on crunchy Biskut Cornflake as you dive into the high-octane film, “Paskal”, where a hijack takes place in one the most elite special forces in Malaysia.

6. Seri Muka – “Kongsi Raya”

Ever found yourself in a sticky-as-pulut situation with someone you need to impress? Feeding them kuih might just be the olive branch you need. Learn a thing or two from “Kongsi Raya” as Wilson makes the future FIL’s fave kuih to win his heart, in this sweet and heartwarming rom-com on interracial romance.
