Despite having the busiest schedules on earth, most K-pop idols still find the time to sit down and read their favourite books. When they’re not jet-setting across the world, dancing, or singing, these celebrities would unwind by immersing themselves in words and stories.

Luckily, they enjoy talking about their favourite books and sharing their recommendations to their fans so that we get to check out their most loved reads as well – be it classic literature or contemporary novels. Idols like BTS’ RM and IU often share their latest reads and recommendations with fans on variety shows and social media, while others are spotted with a book in hand, whether in the glam room or the airport.

Here are some books that K-pop idols love to read:

“Demian” by Hermann Hesse

This coming-of-age classic has been recommended by several idols like IU, SHINEE’s late Jonghyun, as well as band leader Onew. RM of BTS has also mentioned the book as an inspiration for the group’s “Wings” era. “Demian” by Hermann Hesse explores themes of individualism, self-discovery, and spiritual awakening.

“Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982” by Cho Nam-joo

Many Korean celebrities have spoken out about their positive thoughts on the book, including Red Velvet’s Irene who has sparked discussions about its themes of gender inequality and societal expectations, RM of BTS, and Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung. “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982” follows an average young woman in Korea who struggles with sexist experiences and the expectation and reality of quitting her job to become a stay-at-home wife and mother.

“The Brothers Karamazov” by Fyodor Dostoevsky

IU was seen reading this profound philosophical novel on the reality show “Hyori’s Home Stay”. “The Brothers Karamazov” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Set in the fictional town of Skotoprigonyevsk, it revolves around the lives of three Karamazov brothers, exploring themes of morality, spirituality, patricide, and the existence of God.

Seonghyeon of CORTIS has mentioned reading “No Longer Human” by Osamu Dazai in an interview, a novel that delves into universal themes of identity, alienation, and self-destruction. It’s a semi-autobiographical novel that follows Oba Yozo, a man who feels disconnected from society and hides behind humour and outward charm while quietly sinking into isolation and self-destruction.

“The Devotion of Suspect X” by Keigo Higashino

Exo’s Kai has recommended Higashino’s “The Devotion Of Suspect X” when he was guesting on the show, “The Human Condition”, describing it as a novel that left a deep impression on him. The book is a murder mystery following a detective as he tries to solve the most puzzling and mysterious case he has ever encountered.
