These five Malay rappers are making waves and redefining the genre. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer looking to explore the local rap scene, these artists are a must-listen. So crank up the volume and get ready to vibe with some of the coolest names in Malaysian rap!

Airliftz

Airliftz, a rising star from Kajang, Selangor, is known for his versatility as both a rapper and singer, blending thumping basslines with hypnotic melodies in tracks like his debut single “Not Today” under RedRecords. With his unique voice and songwriting, he has opened for big names like Anderson Paak and Joji, becoming a standout performer in the local scene. His latest collaboration with NINA, “Promises,” showcases his growth in exploring themes of love and longing. With fans from Southeast Asia to the UK, Airliftz continues to make waves, staying true to his artistry while aiming for even greater heights.

He gained recognition through “Clumsygang’s Mixtape Volume 2,” but his solo projects, particularly the album “Ini Kisah Benar,” released in 2021, truly showcase his talent by blending various musical styles, from jazz-hop to apocalyptic beats. Ichu stands out for his ability to weave complex narratives into his music, with tracks like ‘I’ and collaborations with artists like Lurkgurl demonstrating his creative range. Not just focused on catchy hooks, he crafts a sonic journey that evokes deep emotions, earning him international attention and a nomination for Album of the Year in Taiwan, marking him as an artist to watch.

She rose to fame with the hit song “Gila” alongside Noki from K-Clique, becoming the first female hip-hop artist to win at the Anugerah Juara Lagu Ke-35 (AJL35). Despite facing initial disapproval from her family regarding her music career, she proved her talent with her debut single “Dendam Wanita” in 2019. After announcing her retirement earlier this year, Loca B surprised fans with her new single “Gundah Gulana,” demonstrating her continued artistic talent.

Sxph

Sxph has been a key figure in the Malaysian hip-hop scene since 2008, initially gaining recognition as part of the rap group SSK. His debut solo EP, “Lumayan,” showcased his versatility as both a rapper and producer, blending diverse styles and sounds. His latest album, “Nisbah Sinematik Resolusi Penuh”, released in January 2023, is a sci-fi concept album that highlights his artistic growth with its unique soundscapes. As a co-founder of AMPG Worldwide, Sxph remains a driving force in shaping the future of Malaysian rap, making him a must-know artist for hip-hop fans.
