Of course, we have to mention the biggest drama of 2024 so far – The Heir To The Throne (家族荣耀之继承者). Not only was the drama filmed in Malaysia, but the plot heavily focused on the country as it was where the main character, played by Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼), based her business. Besides being able to spot Malaysian landmarks like the KLCC tower, local fans can also keep an eye out for cameos from homegrown talents, including Joey Leong (梁祖仪) and Sandra Lim (林雪卉).

This 2009 drama was labelled as TVB’s grand production of that year for its high budget and star-studded cast, including Nancy Sit (薛家燕), Anita Yuen (袁詠儀), Gallen Lo (羅嘉良) and more. The show’s main character, played by Gallen, was born and raised in Malaysia, particularly in Sabah. The drama featured many scenes in the state so local fans could spot landmarks like the One Borneo Shopping Mall, the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque and Mount Kinabalu.

This 2014 drama starring Aimee Chan (陳茵媺) and Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) was filmed in Hong Kong, Penang and Kuala Lumpur. Like “The Heir To The Throne”, this drama also heavily featured Malaysia in its plot as Ruco’s character plays a tour guide based in Penang. The drama helped boost tourism in both Penang and Kuala Lumpur, with many fans visiting the country to check out the spots shown in the series.

The Impossible 3 (非凡三侠)

Unlike the other dramas on this list, this 6-episode mini-series was the only one entirely filmed in Malaysia. The drama starring Julien Cheung (張智霖), Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) and Chrissie Chau (周秀娜) was a joint production between the Shaw Brothers, Youku and Sunway Group. One significant filming site in the drama is the Jalan Alor bar, Pahit, which the characters in the drama frequent throughout the show.

Shadow of Justice (蚀日风暴)

Last on the list is the 2018 crime drama starring Julien Cheung (張智霖), Sunny Wang (王陽明) and Fiona Sit (薛凱琪). Despite only being in Malaysia for ten days to film the drama, the actors did manage to explore the country and the food. Julien revealed that while filming the drama, he had bak kut teh almost daily. Self-proclaimed nature lover Sunny also praised Malaysia for its mountains and rivers, adding that he got the chance to visit Batu Caves while he was here.
