5 Clues They’re Not Into You So You Can Stop Wasting Time!

Mixed signals? Ah, the universal language of modern dating.

From left-on-read messages to last-minute cancelled plans, the signs are there, and learning to spot them could save you a lot of time and emotional energy in a one-sided situation. Let’s break down the tell-tale behaviours that might point to the other person not being as invested as you are.

1. Friend-Zoning Behaviour

When they say things like, “I wish I could find someone like you,” what they’re really saying is, “You’re great, just not for me.” Phrases like “You’re so nice, like a brother (or sister)” are basically the official Friend-Zone National Anthem. While they might seem flattering at first, these comments reveal that they see you as a friend, not a romantic interest.

And their actions? They speak volumes. Picture this: you’re at a mamak, and they start crying over a breakup with someone else. You’re just there sipping your cold teh tarik, offering support, but feeling more like an emotional support animal than a potential partner. Ouch, right?

Then there’s the movie date suggestion, and their response? “Can I bring my friend Sarah? She’s also single.” Instead of seeing you as a match, they’re basically playing matchmaker for you. Definitely not the romantic vibe you had in mind!

2. No Jealousy, No Problem

If they don’t flinch when you talk about other people, it’s a sign that they’re not emotionally invested in you. In fact, they might even encourage your other pursuits. You mention going out with someone else, and they casually respond, “Oh, that’s nice! They sound great.” Notice the complete lack of curiosity or teasing jealousy? That “meh” reaction is all you need to know: they’re not really bothered.

No jealousy? No problem… for them. But it’s a problem for you if you’re hoping they’ll show more interest. When someone’s emotionally invested, they’ll want to know who’s catching your attention. If they’re not bothered by your other dates, it’s time to reassess the connection.

3. Flaky Behaviour

Flaky behaviour is classic mixed signals territory. They cancel plans with vague excuses like, “Sorry, I can’t make it. I’ll let you know next time,” but that “next time” never actually happens. And there’s no effort to reschedule, which leaves you wondering: am I even a priority, or just an afterthought?

For example, you’ve planned three outings, and each time they cancel with a “Maybe next time.” Meanwhile, they’re posting Instagram stories of themselves out with other friends. This isn’t about being busy – it’s about where their priorities lie. And spoiler alert: it’s not you.

When someone values your time, they make an effort to reconnect. If they’re not doing that, it’s a pretty clear signal of disinterest.

4. No Effort Or Thoughtfulness

Here’s the kicker: they don’t check in on how you’re doing, remember the small details about your life, or do little things to show they care. It’s not about grand gestures – it’s about showing genuine interest through the small stuff.

For instance, you mention you’re stressed about an upcoming presentation, and their response? A crying emoji. It’s cold, impersonal, and reveals that they’re just not invested in the relationship the way you’d like them to be. This kind of response stings because it feels like they’re barely making an effort to connect. A simple “Good luck! I’m sure you’ll crush it” would have felt so much more meaningful.

5. Ghosting

And then there’s the classic disappearing act. One minute, you’re chatting about your favourite nasi lemak stalls, and the next, they’ve vanished faster than a RM5 lunch deal. There’s no explanation, no closure, just complete silence.

You’ve sent them five texts, all blue-ticked, but none of them gets a response. Meanwhile, they’re still updating their WhatsApp status like nothing’s wrong. This silent treatment is a classic sign that they’ve checked out emotionally. It can leave you feeling confused and wondering what went wrong, but the truth is: they’re no longer putting in the effort.

So, chin up! If they’re showing consistent disinterest, take it as a sign to move on. Respect yourself enough to find someone who’s equally excited to be with you. The right relationship feels mutual, not one-sided. Plus, life’s too short to keep waiting for someone who’s already left the chat.

Better things (and people) are ahead – and who knows, they might even vibe with your favourite playlist.
