When you’re known for playing similar roles in your acting career, you’re bound to be typecast. Typecasting occurs when an actor becomes strongly associated with a specific character or role, making it difficult for casting directors to envision them in other roles.
While some of these performers don’t mind, others feel it prevents them from honing their skills and showcasing their range. Sadly, our very own Alvin Chong is currently experiencing this issue. Here’s what he said:

Local singer-actor Alvin Chong has starred in numerous acting projects over the years since 2014. However, the roles he has yet to take on are those of the antagonist and action hero. In an interview with OhBulan, the 34-year-old revealed that he’s been rejected for these roles simply because of his appearance.
“I’ve been told by production teams during auditions that my face is too innocent. It’s already hard enough for a Chinese actor to land a leading role, especially in action films or as the antagonist. I’m always offered romance or rom-coms because I was told that I was too cute,” he said. Despite the rejections, he’s never once considered altering his appearance, apart from darkening his skin by tanning in the sun to appear more masculine. However, he has been taking martial arts lessons to improve his chances.

“I wanted to try other genres so I could continue to learn and improve. I’ve been taking Muay Thai classes to maintain that momentum, so studios would recognise my potential for doing action scenes. I hope to one day star in movie genres other than romance,” he added. We personally would love to see Alvin take on the challenge of starring in an action film or playing an antagonist.
While he waits for that opportunity to come by, the actor is currently starring in “Tiada Seperti Leyla” alongside Rita Nadira. The series is available for streaming on Viu. Watch the trailer below:
