It’s a love story like no other. Two national players from different countries meet on the international court, and the rest is history. Our very own national badminton player, Ong Yew Sin (王耀新), and former Japan national badminton player, Aya Ohori (大堀彩), are now engaged!
In an Instagram post from Ong Yew Sin today (27th March), the couple announced their engagement with a photo of the Malaysian athlete on one knee proposing to his now-fiancée dressed in all white.

The caption reads, “We couldn’t be happier to share this with the world. Different nationality, Different culture, Different living style. We learn to adapt and accept each other’s living style & understand each other’s culture throughout the years. Our forever starts today”.
The pair were first spotted allegedly dating in 2024, after a picture of them wearing couple t-shirts surfaced online, and netizens quickly connected the dots regarding the couple’s relationship. Videos of them interacting on the international court have also piqued the interest of fans around the world, who are rooting for the couple.

Netizens were quick to comment on the announcement from the decorated men’s and mixed doubles players, offering well wishes and congratulations. Instagram user (@/loitecia) commented, “We knew all along, but congrats Ayassin”, highlighting the pair’s awaited announcement of their engagement. National badminton players from Malaysia and Japan alike have also chimed in on the excitement, with our very own Lee Chong Wei commenting, “Congratulations, both of you”.
We also wish this newly engaged couple a big congratulations on their next phase in life! What do we think about this unity between nations? Check out the full Instagram post here:
