Prime The Popcorn, Because Here Are 5 Must-See Movies Dropping This Year!

If you’ve read any of our articles of late, you’d know that 2025 is going to be a killer year for movies. From the return of the first superhero family, to the questionable – yet still exciting – adaptation of “Until Dawn,” moviegoers are absolutely spoilt for choice over what to watch this year.

In fact, things are looking so good that you might not know where to start. Well, we gotchu! Here are our picks of five movies coming out this year that you HAVE to watch!

Mickey 17

YouTube video

Easily one of the most anticipated films of the year, “Mickey 17” follows the story of Mickey Barnes, who is struggling financially and longs to leave the Earth. He then opts to be an “expendable” – a disposable clone worker used as a workhorse, subjected to all sorts of cruel and inhumane labour, and cloned after each death. However, after being incorrectly assumed dead, Mickey is cloned once again while the previous clone is still alive. Now he is forced to grapple with the nature of being expendable amidst an unforgiving government that does not welcome multiple clones.

Based on a novel by Edward Ashton, “Mickey 17” is directed by Bong Joon-ho and stars Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Steven Yeun. The film is set to hit cinemas on 7th March.

Black Bag

If you’re looking for something a little intense, Steven Soderbergh’s “Black Bag” might be just for you. Featuring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, this suspense mystery drama pits two lovers against each other in a dangerous game filled with lies and deceit. The would-be perfect marriage between these two intelligence officers is strained and tested beyond its limits when one of them is suspected of committing high treason.

Set to release this 14th March, the film also features other big names such as Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke, and Pierce Brosnan.

The Bad Guys 2

YouTube video

Of all of Dreamwork’s intellectual property, some of you might have never heard of “The Bad Guys.” Many quickly moved on from this 2022 film after its premiere – until it exploded on review channels and became a commercial success. If you missed the first film in theatres, then it’s best not to miss the sequel, “The Bad Guys 2,” as it follows the crew trying to turn over a new leaf. However, with such notoriety, it’s understandably quite hard. Which is why, when asked by another crew, the team gets back together for one last heist.

The film is directed by Pierre Perifel and is slated for a 1st August release. It stars Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Awkwafina, and Zazie Beetz as anthropomorphic heisters.

28 Years Later

YouTube video

The third installment of the beloved 28 Days Later franchise is almost upon us. The series previously explored a world where the Rage Virus has naturally died down, only for it to have a resurgence. “28 Years Later” further expands upon the world, thrusting us into a desolate land that may never recover, as human civilization further regresses into savagery. Now, we get to see the beloved trope of humans being the worst monsters of all the creatures that roam the planet.

“28 Years Later” is set to hit theatres this 20th June. It’s directed by Danny Boyle and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell.

The Black Phone 2

Going back to another surprise hit, “The Black Phone” was a phenomenal horror thriller that received surprisingly glowing reviews despite its simplistic premise. For those who are unaware of the story, it follows Finney Shaw, a young boy who is abducted by the “The Grabber” and trapped in a soundproof basement with the ubiquitous black phone. Though the line to it is cut, the phone mysteriously rings out, and through it, Finney is able to talk to and receive guidance from The Grabber’s previous victims.

It’s a nail-biting horror movie based on a story from a collection of stories by Joe Hill, son of the legendary Stephen King. Though the sequel is hinted to be an original creation meant to expand on the first movie, it will still feature what made the first film so great, such as director Scott Derrickson, as well as actors Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Ethan Hawke, and Jeremy Davies. The plot of the sequel is kept tightly under wraps, but we do know it’s slated for a 17th October release.
