The rainy season often brings with it strong winds and even stronger downpours. Unfortunately, many buildings don’t fare well with that combination, and that includes some of our favourite shopping malls.
Recently, shoppers at KL Gateway Mall were shocked when a section of the ceiling suddenly collapsed. According to news reports, the ceiling collapsed due to the recent heavy rain on 18th December (Thursday). However, the exact time of the incident remains unknown as there were no reports on those details. However, a video of the incident has emerged on social media, showing the condition of the ceiling and the affected area.

As shown in the video, the incident occurred in front of a nasi kandar restaurant. A small section of the mall’s ceiling fell from a height and hit a few chairs and tables on the ground. Thankfully, no one was in the vicinity during the incident, so there were no reported injuries. The video also showed rainwater on the ground, suggesting the incident caused a leak. However, upon further research, the puddle was likely due to the mall’s open-air design.
KL Gateway Mall has yet to address this issue, but the management has likely been informed of the incident. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time the heavy rain has caused the ceiling of a local shopping mall to collapse. In October 2023, three people were injured when a section of the ceiling at the Megah Rise Mall in Petaling Jaya collapsed during a heavy downpour.

While it’s hard to predict when such incidents will happen, we urge the public to remain vigilant, especially during uncertain weather. We also hope mall management could perform routine checks on their buildings to prevent such issues.
