RM18 For An Ice Cream Cone? Netizens Criticise Suka Dessert’s Overpriced Dessert

Suka Dessert, a local sweet treat shop, has been blowing up on multiple social platforms for its creative innovations and twists on multiple desserts. With creations like cake in a bowl, chocolate strawberries in a cup, and New York croissants, many locals have repeatedly queue in front of this shop to get a taste of what they have to offer.

However, viral sweet treats aren’t cheap – and Malaysians aren’t strangers to expensive goods either. Suka Dessert has been criticised multiple times for “overpricing” its goods, but many came to defend the confectionery, saying the pricing is fair for what it has to offer customers. Unfortunately, the shop has recently come under fire again, after launched its newest product – a 3-layer ice cream cone.

The 3-layer ice cream cone, which includes brownies and melted chocolate in the cone, is topped with homemade vanilla or chocolate gelato. Each cone costs RM18, which is arguably pricier compared to a regular ice cream cone. Auntie Ja, the owner of Suka Dessert, have came forward to explain the reason why it was so pricey. “Suka Dessert needs to pay taxes, staff wages, and rent. Plus, we have our recipe for the 3-layer ice cream. There are brownies inside the cone, and we don’t just use leftover brownies from other batches,” she said.

Many supported Auntie Ja, claiming the prices were fair for what they were getting and even going as far as to compare with Godiva’s ice cream cone. However, others disagreed, saying local products should be cheaper than international, well-known brands. The difference in opinion on Twitter and TikTok was stark, with the respective platforms holding strong to their thoughts.

We think everyone has the right to run their business however they want, since we aren’t forced to purchase their products anyway – but what do you think of this? Do you think the price is reasonable?
