“Gladiator” was a box office hit when it came out over 2 decades ago. This November, the highly anticipated sequel, “Gladiator II”, directed by acclaimed English filmmaker Ridley Scott, makes its return to the big screen. Fans are buzzing with excitement, as critics have already suggested that the film could be one of the best of the year.
Russell Crowe’s character Maximus had died by the end of the first movie. The new film doesn’t bring back Maximus. Instead, it takes places decades later with the spotlight on his son, an adult Lucius played by Paul Mescal. The star-studded cast also includes Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, and Derek Jacobi, among others. Considering the original “Gladiator” won 5 Oscars (including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe), expectations are high for this exhilarating sequel.
“Gladiator II” plot synopsis reads:
“Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced into the Colosseum after his home is conquered by tyrannical emperors who now rule Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find the strength and honour needed to restore the glory of Rome to its people.”
Despite playing enemies onscreen, Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal became fast friends. “I am really excited for everyone to see Paul. I’m sorry, but it has to be said, you are sensational in the movie,” said Pedro during an interview with EW. “He worked so hard, and I got to see that happen in front of me and on the day and lead, with Ridley, this enormous crew and this enormous cast. I think people are going to love it.”
Paul added, “I think for a lot of us, from the actors, we haven’t worked on a film on that scale. And I think there was a little bit of trauma bonding that went on kind of feeling like total imposter syndrome within it all. But to see your friends operate at that level on a film of that scale, doing incredible work, I think, across the board… It’s rooted, it has the scale, but I think it also has the pathos and the performances. And I personally think it’s one of Ridley’s greatest pieces of work, which is no mean feat.”
As for who’s the better warrior? “I would say Lucius is the better fighter,” Paul answered. However, Pedro begged to defer. “Lucius is the better fighter? Do you want us to fight?” the actor joked. The warmth between the 2 leads is apparent, adding even more anticipation to see the mens’ on-screen dynamic when “Gladiator II” hits theatres.
