Previously, Malaysians expressed concern after noticing the closure of several Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) outlets in shopping centres across the Klang Valley. CEO Koh Mei Lee reassured moviegoers that there was no cause for alarm, explaining that the closures were simply due to expiring leases and planned relocations.

Regardless of the reason, it’s still disheartening to hear news about a cinema no longer operating at a certain location. Despite the plans for the mall’s revival, Shah Alam locals were shocked to learn that the MBO Cinemas outlet at Space U8, which first opened back in 2011, would be closing down soon. Here are the details:

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of MBO Space U8 on 29th September. 😢 Thank you to all who have visited us so far. ❤ Hope to see you again in other MBO Cinemas locations,” the company wrote on their Facebook page. In their official statement, they’ve provided the nearest alternative cinema outlets for moviegoers which are Harbour Place and Quayside Mall.

The cinema chain did not, however, disclose the reason for the Space U8 outlet closure. Netizens, particularly those who live in Shah Alam, took to social media to express their dismay over the sudden news. Many reminisced about the times they spent at Malaysia’s first eco shopping centre during their study years, watching the latest releases at MBO. Some speculated on the reason for the outlet’s closure noting that the mall hardly has customers. Others joked that the desolate atmosphere was perfect for watching horror movies.

A few pointed out that MBO is one of the only attractions keeping Space U8 afloat. Netizens also argued that the alternative outlets at Harbour Place and Quayside Mall are no better claiming that they’re just as empty. If the reason for closure is a decrease in the number of moviegoers then it was probably the right decision for MBO Cinemas to cease operations at that location.
