Malaysia has so much to offer that is truly one-of-a-kind, from its multi-talented individuals who have gained international recognition to its unique and iconic buildings across the country. Despite these achievements, many of them are underappreciated by both locals and the global community.

However, Malaysia continues to break barriers and make its mark. Check out these five recent World Records set by Malaysians that we’ve compiled to celebrate these remarkable feats and remind us of the pride we should take in our nation’s talents!

1. Fastest Running Marathon In Baju Melayu

On the second day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri last year, a Malaysian man named Mohd Syahidan Alias, known as Edan Syah on social media made history by achieving a Guinness World Record for being the fastest runner to complete a marathon in a full Baju Melayu. He set the record during the 42.2 km London Marathon on 23rd April 2023 in the United Kingdom, finishing in an impressive time of 2 hours, 49 minutes, and 22 seconds.

In a bid to promote Malaysian culture on an international stage, Syahidan proudly wore a red Baju Melayu with a blue kain samping, complemented by yellow sports shoes—a tribute to the vibrant colours of the Jalur Gemilang. His remarkable achievement and dedication to showcasing local culture were widely praised, both in Malaysia and abroad.

2. Largest Spider-Man Gathering

To celebrate the release of “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse,”  Sony Pictures and AEON Mall organised a massive Spider-Man costume gathering at AEON Mall Bukit Tinggi on 3rd June 2023. A total of 685 Spider-Man cosplayers filled the Centre Court, breaking the previous Guinness World Record held by India, where 601 people dressed as the superhero in 2021. The event was officially recognised by the Guinness World Record Adjudicator, marking Malaysia’s incredible achievement on the global stage.

The day concluded with a certificate presentation to the Managing Director of Sony Pictures Malaysia, Mr. Simon Foo, and the Chief Property Officer of AEON, Mr. Lee Beng Beng. It was a memorable occasion that united fans and highlighted Malaysia’s love for the iconic Marvel superhero.

3. Largest Dragonfruit-Shaped Structure

What could be more uniquely Malaysian than structures shaped like iconic local foods? The world’s largest dragon fruit-shaped building, standing over 9 meters tall, has become a must-see attraction for tourists visiting Sepang. Located at the Hong Long (HL) Dragon Fruit Eco Farm, this impressive monument earned a Guinness World Record in November 2023, making the farm the proud holder of the title for the largest dragon fruit-shaped structure.

Beyond its eye-catching design, the building also serves as a mini-museum. Visitors can explore the interior, which features glow-in-the-dark artwork adorning the walls, offering a fun and artistic experience that adds to the charm of this quirky landmark.

4. Largest Serving Stir-Fried Noodles

Earlier in May this year, 86 chefs made history by setting a new world record for the largest Johor-style fried noodles dish. The impressive feat took place during the World Chefs Championship at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre. Using a whopping 667 kg of noodles, the chefs were divided into 20 kitchens, with each kitchen having four to five cooks dedicated to frying the noodles. This achievement not only showcased Malaysia’s culinary prowess but also highlighted the rich food culture of Johor.

5. Fastest Mile In Handcuffs & Barefoot

Former national athlete Melinder Kaur made headlines by achieving two Guinness World Records at the KL Sports Arena in Setapak on 8th June earlier this year. The 36-year-old athlete set an incredible record for the “fastest mile (1.6 km) in handcuffs,” finishing in an impressive time of 5:57.34, and another for the “fastest mile on barefoot,” with a time of 6:04.87. Her remarkable achievements have further solidified her legacy in the sports world, as she continues to inspire athletes across Malaysia.

Along with the previous list of Malaysia’s world records, it is clear that our country is brimming with talent and unique cultural spirit. Which one do you find the most impressive?
