Marriage news involving K-pop idols is quite rare, as most of them tend to focus on their careers and often face dating bans. So when a marriage announcement between K-pop idols does surface, it naturally sends fans into a frenzy. However, after the initial shock, the K-pop community would eventually offer their full support and love to the lovebirds.
But this particular couple is an exception. After confirming their engaged relationship earlier this year, HyunA (현아) and former HIGHLIGHT/BEAST (하이라이트/ 비스트) member Yong Junhyung (용준형) later announced their marriage plans for this October. Once again, the pair has found themselves at the centre of controversy—here’s why:
Recently, a photo believed to be the wedding picture of the “Bubble Pop!” singer and her fiancé has been circulating online, causing quite a buzz. The image, reportedly shared by one of their close friends, came with the caption, “Even the wedding feels like a photoshoot.” In the photo, the couple is seen wearing matching white outfits, striking an affectionate pose.
Despite what should be a joyful announcement, most reactions from netizens have been cold. Much of the backlash stems from Junhyung’s involvement in the 2019 “Burning Sun” scandal, which continues to cast a shadow over his reputation. Additionally, many are labelling this as HyunA’s “betrayal” of the late Goo Hara (구하라), as she is now dating her friend’s ex-boyfriend.
Adding to the controversy is the fact that before getting engaged to the former BEAST member, the 32-year-old solo idol had ended her relationship with her previous boyfriend, DAWN (던), reportedly because she didn’t want to get married and felt burdened by the relationship, despite the numerous sacrifices DAWN had made for her. This apparent change of heart has only fuelled the fire, leading many to criticise and disapprove of her new relationship.
Given the ongoing controversies surrounding the engaged couple, it’s not surprising that netizens have responded negatively to the update. Many comments are wishing that their marriage will be fraught with misery. Some are even eagerly anticipating the wedding, not to celebrate but to see which celebrities will attend, so they can be “cancelled” for supporting this relationship.
