Malaysians love our durians more than anything and that’s a known fact. We’re willing to go through high lengths and pay hefty prices to make sure we only get the best of the best – and durian prices can be pretty hefty especially with how high in demand they are. However, where do we draw the line at the price of a durian?

This new durian variant costs – believe it or not – RM1,000. Yes, RM1k for a fruit, and even to some durian enthusiast, that seems pretty extreme. You’ve heard of Musang King, Black Thorn, and D24 but some of you may have never heard of the Tupai King. This new variant boasts about the texture, taste, smell and look that is supposedly promised to make the RM1k worth every penny.

A video on Facebook featuring the rare variant, durian farmer Brian Ong explained that this variant of the fruit fruit can go up to prices from RM600 to RM1000, depending on the weight. As for why the prices can go up that high, Brian said because it’s a rare variant.

Brian also shared some tips for all durian enthusiasts on how to identify a real Tupai King, also known as the D214, so you’ll always get an authentic one and not be deceived by other durian vendors looking to sell a D24 for the price of the rare Tupai King. “The flesh is mainly yellow with a little bit of green, and is full of fat. The aroma is as thick as Musang King, but this is a little bitter“, the Penangite explained.

The Tupai King was officially registered on 24th February 2024, as another variant of durian that is set to overthrow the Musang King’s popularity. To all the durian enthusiast out there, how far and how much are you willing to sacrifice for the best durian out there? Fret not, there are cheaper options around Klang Valley here.
