They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – but imitating someone can also bring a lot of trouble. Recently, a Jackson Wang (王嘉爾) impersonator made rounds on social media for his intimate interactions with fans, leading to a ton of backlash.
The issue was first brought to light by a Jackson fan on Twitter, who warned about a Jackson impersonator who has been attending events pretending to be the star. In the video shared, the impersonator interacted with a fan in what looked like a club. However, the interaction seemed slightly intimate as the man stroked the fan’s hair and almost locked lips.
The Jackson impersonator was revealed to be Zhao Liangliang, who has amassed a following on Douyin for his cosplay of the Hong Kong-born idol. Zhao has also shared many videos of himself interacting with fans while pretending to be Jackson. Some examples of the fanservice he has engaged in include hugging and patting fans’ heads.
Many fans have condemned the man for his actions, saying it’ll negatively affect Jackson’s reputation. The Twitter user has since urged other Jackson fans to report the impersonator and his videos because the public could mistake him for the GOT7 member. The fans also urge Jackson’s agency, TEAM WANG, to take legal action against Zhao before he damages the singer’s reputation.
However, some fans also noted that TEAM WANG has issued a warning against Zhao in the past for impersonating Jackson – but it seems that the warning had little to no effect on the man. Many fans also lament that Jackson impersonators are common in China, with multiple men trying to profit off the 30-year-old’s popularity by pretending to be him at events and clubs.
We do hope TEAM WANG will take strict actions against Zhao and other Jackson impersonators to protect the singer’s image and reputation.
