Taylor Swift’s 6-day “The Eras Tour” concert in Singapore is one of the most highly-anticipated events of the year. Many, including celebs have attended the extravagant show and one of those celebs was none other than BLACKPINK’s Lisa, who also had a meaningful interaction with some fans there.
The last time the country-turned-pop artist was in Singapore was during her “The 1989 Tour” back in 2016 but her love for the country is more than just her last show. Did you know that her mother and grandmother used to live in Singapore? Here’s what the singer shared during her concert over the weekend:
After performing the song “Marjorie”, Taylor Swift, on the piano, shared some interesting facts about her family’s past. She revealed that her mother Andrea used to live and study in Singapore during her childhood. “A lot of the time when we came here on tour, my mum would take me and drive me past her old house and where she used to go to school. So, I’ve been hearing about Singapore my whole life,” the singer said.
This may not be brand new information to some as she once shared this story in a newspaper interview with The Straits Times in 2010 but the most interesting part about this story is that her grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, used to perform in Singapore as an opera singer! A journalist named Rick Koh Buck Song did some digging after revisiting the Grammy winner’s “Marjorie” Lyric Video.
In the video, Taylor’s grandmother was seen walking out of a British colonial bungalow before hopping into a car. It was discovered that the vehicle had a Singapore-registered license plate after closer inspection. The writer also provided more information on a 1968 article about Marjorie who was cast to play the soprano lead in “The Bartered Bride”, an opera by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. The production was staged at the Victoria Theatre over five nights.
Guess Taylor was always destined to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps. As for how the singer’s family had a life in Singapore back in the day, in the 2010 The Strait Times interview, the “Cats” actress revealed that her grandfather had a career as an oil rig engineer and would move around the world, bringing his family along.
Have you always known this about Taylor’s family or was this brand new information to you?
