If you frequently use the MRT, you may have noticed a new addition to the MRT Tun Razak Exchange station, specifically the name. The station is now called ‘MRT TRX Samsung Galaxy’ – but how did this come to be?

On 29th February, MRT Corp officially announced the name change and launched the partnership between MRT Corp and Samsung Malaysia for the Station Naming Rights Programme. Besides the name change, the partnership also allows Samsung to integrate its brand into the station through advertisements. CEO of MRT Corp Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim, spoke about the partnership, saying, “We are pleased to welcome the globally renowned Samsung Galaxy as our Station Naming Rights and Station Domination Advertising partner at this station, now named TRX Samsung Galaxy MRT Station.”

The station takeover integrates Samsung into a network of 29 stations along the MRT Putrajaya Line. The TRX Samsung Galaxy station is the largest interchange station between the TRX station and the Putrajaya line. It also directly serves The Exchange TRX and over 220,000 daily commuters. Following the partnership, the MRT station will now serve as an advertising and marketing location for the Samsung brand.

However, many have expected the brand takeover because Samsung has already made its mark in the station for a while now. Previously, a Twitter user revealed that Samsung Malaysia had shifted its advertising focus onto the TRX station due to limitations in advertising inside The Exchange TRX because of a supposed contract clause between the mall and its tenant, Apple, to allow the mall to house the first Apple Store in Malaysia.

Many netizens have reacted to the official announcement of the TRX Samsung Galaxy station. Unsurprisingly, most joked about the move being Samsung’s way of getting back at The Exchange TRX for favouring its competitor. Some also joked that those wanting to head to the Apple Store in the mall will have to stop at a Samsung-branded station and be bombarded with tons of Samsung Galaxy advertisements before they can even enter the mall.
