There can be many reasons not to have kids in this day and age. Some say having kids is a huge financial burden, while others say they’re not ready to face all those responsibilities. However, that doesn’t stop some from encouraging others to start a family.
One of those is Sim Tze Tzin, the Member of Parliament for Bayan Baru. The politician, concerned about the low birth rates amongst the Malaysian Chinese population, recently shared a post on Facebook to encourage Malaysian Chinese to get married and start having children. In his post, Sim discussed the difference in the marriage and birth rates amongst local Muslims and non-Muslims, noting a stark difference.

Sim also urged Chinese communities to look into the problem of fewer marriages, adding that marriages should be encouraged. While he does mention that staying single can be a personal choice, he also urge for those who are single to go out and seek life partners. The Bayan Baru MP also previously discussed the low birth rate amongst Malaysian Chinese, saying that the number could affect the survival of public Chinese schools.
While he may have shared the post out of concern for the declining birth rate, many criticised Shim for overlooking the challenges faced by the public. Many lamented that the increased cost of living is the biggest reason for adults not having kids, adding that the government should tackle this issue before asking the public to have children. Some even sarcastically commented that the politician should sponsor Malaysians if he wants to see them have children.

Some netizens commend Sim’s intention and concern for the country but criticised his execution with the posts. What do you think about this? Do you agree with the politician? Or do you think there are more important issues for him to focus on?
