If there’s one thing Malaysians and Singaporeans banter about, it’s food. It’s obvious our cuisine has many similarities but we’ll always debate who does what better. However, a recently shared list has got tons of Malaysians scoffing over the results.
World Index recently shared the list of ‘Top 10 Foodie Destinations in Southeast Asia’ on their Twitter page. In the list, Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur take the top three spots, respectively. The only other Malaysian city on the list is Melaka, which placed seventh. While many Malaysians were happy about two local cities placing in the Top 10 list, many couldn’t help but poke fun at Singapore’s “questionable” second spot placement.
Many local netizens jokingly asked if Singapore had paid the survey to place higher than Malaysia on the list. Some netizens said that even Singaporeans would come to Malaysia to enjoy the food here. Others also questioned why local cities known for their food, like Penang and Ipoh, aren’t even on the list, leading many to call the list bluff.
However, it is worth noting that the simple tweet might have missed out on some information. According to data gathering site Statista, the cities on the list weren’t chosen as having the best food. Instead, the list reflects the number of endorsements for ‘food’, ‘local food’ and ‘restaurants’ given to the destination by global travellers. That means reviews might not included in the statistics, so it’s not entirely accurate that Singapore has better food than Malaysia.
Of course, food is a subjective topic and not everyone would share the same opinion – but what do you think about the list? Do you agree or disagree with the list?
