As many will know, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (杨紫琼) tied the knot with long time lover Jean Todt last July, much to everyone’s excitement. However, it may come as a surprise to some that this is not Michelle’s first marriage.
In 1988, Michelle Yeoh married Hong Kong businessman Dickson Poon (潘廸生), even retiring early from her acting career. But, in 1992, the couple revealed that they were divorcing, claiming they shared different plans for life. It wasn’t until recently that Michelle revealed more behind the why.
Michelle allegedly wanted to continue building her career while Dickson had hoped she would settle and focus on their family instead. But, in a recent interview, Michelle shared another major reason for their marriage not working out. According to her, the reason was related to kids!
The actress shared that she had struggled to have kids with Dickson. “It wasn’t for lack of trying, we did whatever was necessary,” she shared. “I was physically unable to.” However, Dickson had apparently wanted a big family, with two to three sons to carry on his lineage and to help with his business empire. With that in mind, Michelle and Dickson both decided to divorce.
“In hindsight now, I think it was the smart thing for me to do. To be able to step away and not pretend it will work out,” she admitted. She shared that they did love each other, but felt that continuing the relationship would not change anything. Michelle also added that she and Dickson are still good friends today and she’s on good terms with his ex-wife and kids.
But, Michelle Yeoh isn’t too torn up about not having any children of her own. Currently, she has six godchildren, thanks to her close friends, and grandchildren from her step-children! The children in her life have delighted her immensely as she views them as “one of the biggest joys in anybody’s life“.
Well, there’s certainly no denying Michelle Yeoh’s love for kids, as evident by her Instagram postings. We aren’t sure what her family plans are with Jean Todt, but, we wish her well and are glad to see her family still bloom around her, regardless of blood ties.
