Food may be a necessity, but in recent days, many think they aren’t worth the price. And after paying a hefty amount for just one plate of rice and a prawn, this local netizen has since joined the ranks of people complaining about the steep food prices.

The netizen recently visited a well-known eatery in Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur boasting kampung-style Malay food. But, they were severely caught off-guard by the price of their food which came up to a total of RM37. Needless to say, others have since shared their own astonishment at the cost.

“Today’s lunch,” they shared on their Twitter, adding a photo of a plate of rice with one egg and a prawn on the side. “The shrimp was RM30. Is that logical? All together is RM37 including water. I googled that tiger prawns are RM40 per kilo. I don’t know, is this inflation?” The customer added that most would likely know the restaurant, claiming it was at Pantai Dalam.

As it turns out, several identified the restaurant as Kak Nin Patin House with some claiming to have eaten there before. A few testified that the food was delicious, but many more were horrified by the prices. “Did the shop not display their prices?” one asked. Another advised: “You need to ask (about the price) before you eat, brother. If not, you will end up like this.”

One netizen shared they too had been affected by the ludicrous prices, claiming they had paid RM74 for a plate of rice, one prawn and ulam, and sea snails. “It’s fine if the prawns are expensive, but there’s no way the snails and ulam are worth RM44?” Someone else claimed they had to pay RM800 for an ikan kelah (Mahseer), catfish and prawns.

According to a netizen, the shop had previously displayed their prices, with the prawns being worth roughly RM15 to RM25. “This photo is from 2020. These are their old prices, I think,” they admitted. The customer shared: “I did think (the prawns were worth) RM15 to RM25. But it was RM30. And now, there’s no price displayed.”

Others advised the customer to opt for some homecooked prawns instead next time, while some joked it was a good thing they had only taken the one prawn. “My friend almost took two. Thank goodness (they didn’t),” the customer said.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time customers have felt they were being overcharged for their food. Previously, someone paid RM28 for a plate of mixed rice while another paid RM20 for a plate of turmeric chicken. Even Llaollao’s frozen yoghurt is getting more expensive, it seems.

Well, there’s no denying that some prices of food nowadays are certainly bordering on crazy. But we guess it still boils down to how much are you willing to pay for your food and if you think it’s worth it.
