There’s nothing like a fine spirit, and a fine drink is only improved upon with great company and sparkling conversation. That is something we learned when we visited Hennessy X.O’s masterclass as we watched master mixologists craft exquisite cocktails before our very eyes.
The event was held in OMNI BAR KL, and who better to spearhead this gathering than Maxime Touzeau, Hennessey & Co.’s very own Global Brand Ambassador? A native of the Cognac region, Maxime gave us a brief but informative history of Hennessy X.O, how cognac is made, and how the knowledge of making fine spirits is passed on for generations.
In this masterclass, we explored the various ways to enjoy and make cognac cocktails. The first of which was exploring the seven different flavours found in the iconic drink. These tastes are the “Sweet Notes,” “Rising Heat,” “Spicy Edge,” “Flowing Flame,” “Chocolate Lull,” “Wood Crunches” and “Infinite Echo.” Each taste accentuates a certain aspect of the Hennessy X.O; I personally took part in trying the Wood Crunches, and they were not kidding when they said you can smell and taste wood (with a hint of cinnamon).
Afterwards, we took another round of the powerful spirit in its purest form. Admittedly, the drink was rather heavy for the light drinkers in the house, myself included. However, Maxime presented another way to accentuate the drink’s seven aspects once again, in the form of chocolates. With a quick swig to familiarise ourselves with the original taste of Hennessy X.O, we then followed it up with chocolate, creating a smoother sensation even for the most sophisticated drinker.
Truly, it was a sensation unlike any other, something that wouldn’t have been recognised if it weren’t for the masterful works of the resident mixologist and Maxime Touzeau’s insight and passion for this fine drink.
