Most parents would normally put a lot of thought when naming their child as the name not only carries the child’s identity but also the parent’s hopes and dreams for them. Even if you want to be creative with naming your kid, perhaps choose a name that won’t negatively affect their lives.
This entrepreneur from Sabah thought someone was trolling her when one of her participants revealed her real name during an event. She was very surprised after the participant pulled out her IC to prove that it was in fact her name. Here’s the full story:
A few days ago, Nina Othman, founder of Borneo Cocoa, posted on Facebook about what happened during a recent entrepreneurship program. In her post, the businesswoman asked her participants to use their actual names on Facebook and WhatsApp so they would appear more professional when they become entrepreneurs later in life.
“I asked them to not use any nicknames or usernames like ‘Sweet Girl’, ‘Pinky Comel’, ‘CuteBear33’ or something like that. For the activity that we were doing, everyone agreed to use part of their real names, as long as it’s not a nickname,” she wrote. However, the organiser was fuming after a participant introduced herself as Baby during her presentation. When she asked the presenter to clarify her real name, she answered that Baby is a part of her birth name.
Confused, Nina asked if the participant was serious to which she replied, “Yes, my name is Baby Girl Binti Ariffin”. As proof, the participant presented her IC and sure enough, that is her actual name. The organiser then apologised for getting mad at the Sabahan woman for not believing that she actually used her real name during the event and helped promote her onde-onde business at the end of the post.
The story blew up on both Facebook and Twitter with netizens being amused and baffled by the woman’s name. Some claimed that it’s not uncommon to find strange or unique names in Sabah while those on Twitter advised parents to not name their child anything silly as they might end up getting bullied and hating the name given to them.
Although Baby Girl can be a cute nickname, we personally agree that parents should name their children wisely so that they wouldn’t have to continuously explain themselves and present their ICs whenever they meet new people. Have you come across anyone with a unique name?
