Interracial marriage is not uncommon these days but people will have their opinions when it comes to certain holiday celebrations, regardless if it’s cultural or religious. This woman was hurt after hearing what her future mother-in-law said about her celebrating Christmas with her family.
Yesterday evening (Thursday, 4th January), an anonymous user submitted a confession on the SecretsMY Twitter page, detailing her troubles with her fiance’s family. In the submission, the woman revealed that she still celebrates the Christmas holiday as she grew up in a mixed-race family.
“My fiance’s family are pure Malays. Recently, I celebrated Christmas with my non-Muslim family members. One day, he accidentally forwarded a voice note from his mother to me. In the voice note, his mother told him, ‘Hurry up and marry her so she won’t have to celebrate those holidays. It’s not good for people like us to celebrate anything haram’. I was hurt by her words but kept quiet,” she said.
When the unnamed netizen asked her husband-to-be about the voice note, he dismissed her concerns and told her to not worry about it. The woman proceeded to ask for opinions from others if it was wrong for her to celebrate Christmas with her non-Muslim family members.
As expected, netizens were torn about the situation with some agreeing that Muslims should not be celebrating another religion’s holiday while others suggested that the woman break off her engagement since her fiance’s family cannot accept her family’s traditions. Many also shared that there’s nothing wrong with Muslims celebrating another holiday as long as they don’t partake in the religious aspects of it.
This topic has actually been discussed many times before, especially when it comes to celebrities. Just last month, many criticised former television host Marion Caunter and her husband SM Nasarudin for still celebrating Christmas despite the former converting to Islam when the couple got married.
Singer Nourul Depp once denounced a fan for criticising her for also celebrating the jolly holiday. Back in 2021, singer Damian Mikhail received a lot of backlash from netizens after posting a photo of his family celebrating Christmas while dressed as Santa Claus and Elves.
It seems that this topic is still sensitive to many as no one can agree with each other’s opinions regarding holiday celebrations.
