Different people have different definitions of what luxury is. For some, it can be a branded handbag or an expensive car – but for others, it is as simple as a meal from a fast food joint.
In a TikTok slideshow uploaded by Zulfadhli Zin, the man explained how he rewards himself. According to the video, his peers would often ask him, “When you want to reward yourself, you only buy KFC. Is there nothing else?”, implying that a meal from a fast food restaurant is not really considered a reward. Zulfadhli responded, “I’m not the one buying – he is,” showing a picture of him as a young child.
Penutup September, aku reward diri aku dengan KFC sebab achieve something.
Memang KFC menjadi pilihan nak reward diri. Sebab itu makanan yang susah nak dapat time kecik.
Aku post dekat tiktok sebelum tidur. Bangun tidur banyak notification & berair mata aku baca comment☹️ pic.twitter.com/QQfUs9I29w

In the captions for the post, Zulfadhli shared, “Healing my inner child. KFC was an expensive meal for my family when I was younger,” revealing that he used to see the restaurant as a luxury and why he now sees it as a reward. He also shared the video on Twitter, saying that he bought the meal at the end of September after achieving something and adding that KFC is his “comfort food”.
To his surprise, many other Malaysians relate to him and his experience. On TikTok, many netizens commented that the fast food restaurant was also a luxury to them growing up, which is why they also get the chicken meal as a reward. Some also said they have the same mindset but with other items, like one netizen who said she rewards herself with stationary because it was something she couldn’t afford when she was younger.
Those on Twitter also related to Zulfadhli, saying they consider KFC as a “top tier treat” as well. Some also said that they buy KFC because of nostalgia with another netizen saying that a meal from the restaurant reminded them of their late grandfather because they will also have it during celebrations.
Whether it’s because of the taste of their chicken or the memories it holds, it seems that KFC has a special place in many Malaysians’ hearts.
