Last week, a single mother from Kepong went on social media, begging for the return of her teenage daughter who ran away from home. After days of waiting, she shared that her daughter had been found safe and sound.
On 25th September, 17-year-old Tan Yuen Hoon ran away from home, leaving a note for her mother, Judy Tan, that read, “I’m sorry, Mum. I am leaving home and please don’t look for me,”. Since then, Judy has relentlessly searched for her teenage daughter and her efforts paid off as Yuen Hoon was found safe at a hotel in Penang.
According to China Press, Judy travelled to Penang to search for her daughter. With the help of local authorities, she was able to locate her daughter, who was staying by herself at a hotel. After the two were reunited, Judy went on Facebook to announce the news to the public, sharing an image of her and her daughter in front of the North-East District Penang Police Station.
Many Malaysians were relieved that a Kepong teen had reunited with her mother. They also thanked the officer for his work and advised the mother-daughter duo to communicate with each other about their problems from now on. It was assumed that Yuen Hoon had run away from home due to the immense stress and pressure of her upcoming Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.
During the search period, Judy also revealed that she was contacted by many scammers who told her that Yuen Hoon was in their custody and demanded a large sum of money for her release. The experience led Judy to voice her frustration over scammers trying to take advantage of a vulnerable moment.
We’re happy that Judy has found her daughter, and we thank the many people who played their part to help with the search.
