For most Malaysians, 31st August is a day to celebrate our National Day. But for former national shuttler Goh Liu Ying (吴柳莹), there’s another reason to celebrate on 31st August now. Just yesterday, the 33-year-old gave birth to her first child!
Early April, the much loved former shuttler delighted netizens when she announced her marriage and that she was pregnant. Well, for one who has loved and competed for her country, nothing could be better than giving birth to her first-born on our National Day!

Goh Liu Ying has been anticipating her arrival of her child, as evident by her many pregnancy photos on her socials. And it was no surprise to see her prepared for her delivery the day before. The expecting mom looked very excited to welcome the new member to her family.
Around 7.30pm, Liu Ying took to her socials to announce the good news. “Welcome to (a) new world, my Merdeka baby. “Saya Anak Malaysia❤️”,” she quipped. Her post has since garnered 86,000 likes collectively on Facebook and Instagram, with Malaysians rushing to congratulate her.
Her fellow shuttlers were the first to wish her, with some teasing that they had a “new sibling” now. National doubles player Lim Chiew Sien (林秋仙) also joked Liu Ying had “even (given) birth for Malaysia“. Other celebs too flooded her comments section with congratulatory messages.

Like the rest of our fellow Malaysians. we’re delighted for Goh Liu Ying. It’s certainly fitting and ironic for someone who has loved Malaysia so much to have another reason to celebrate National day. Congrats to the family and we wish her, her family and her new baby well!
