A few months ago, a Grab driver was under fire when he asked a customer to cancel the ride midway due to her being overweight. Prior to that, another refused to pick up a customer after making a racial assumption that she was drunk.
Perhaps it may be better for these drivers to refrain from explaining their real reasons to customers. This Grab driver, on the other hand, probably should’ve been more specific with his reasoning for asking a customer to cancel a ride. Here’s what happened:
On Twitter earlier today (Tuesday, 29th August), a netizen who goes by Alexandra Ellanie posted a screenshot of the message she received from the Grab driver after booking a ride last night at around 11:04pm. According to the post, the driver apparently asked the customer to cancel the ride because she was a Malay and a Muslim. “Just because I’m Malay and Muslim, I can’t take a Grabcar? Welp 🤷🏻♀️,” she wrote in her captions.
The tweet sparked a heated discussion among netizens with many calling out the driver for being racist and Islamophobic while others suspected that this may be a case of misunderstanding as the driver did not specify why he couldn’t pick up the customer. There are those who assumed that the driver may had good intentions as he may have carried something that’s considered haram in Islam earlier that day.
Some, however, believed that the driver could’ve specified his reasonings and canceled the ride himself if he wanted or needed to. Even influencer Ceddy Ang said that the driver could’ve explained himself better. A few suspected that the netizen who posted the screenshot may be using a fake account to stir up some controversy.
Not long after the tweet went viral, Grab Malaysia replied to the customer with: “We sincerely apologise for the bad experience that you have encountered with our driver 😔We would like to investigate this further and wish to share this with the relevant driver’s team immediately.”
At the time of writing, there has been no follow-up post regarding this case. We hope that the issue will be resolved soon.
