After moving to Australia back in 2021, Malaysian entrepreneur Nur Sajat has lived a relatively peaceful life. Prior to the migration though, the businesswoman was once arrested in Thailand after her passport was cancelled by the Malaysian government.
She hasn’t broken any rules in her new home but rumours about her getting arrested in Australia circulated on social media recently. The queer figure took to Instagram to personally address those rumours.
Earlier today (Friday, 18th August), Nur Sajat uploaded a carousel post on Instagram showing screenshots of two separate Facebook posts. The first post was a netizen mockingly asking, “Is it true that Sajat got arrested in Australia cause of passport trouble?”. The second slide showed a fake news outlet page with a headline that reads, “[BREAKING] Sajat arrested at 6am in Australia over invalid passport”.
The cosmetic mogul quickly denied those rumours and commented about how people are quick to believe fake news without verifying the source. “When people talk about fake news, a lot of them would roll their eyes and say, ‘Oh whatever! People will figure it out’ but the truth is, they don’t always figure it out,” she wrote in her captions.
The “Makhluk Penggoda” singer added that she believes social media and other online platforms are one of the many causes of the phenomenon where fake news is widely spread. “I have said that propaganda, misinformation, and disinformation have always been part of political warfare,” she said. At the bottom of her post, the entrepreneur slammed those who believe and spread false information with the hashtags: #fakenews #stupidpeople #donthavegoodsearchskills #imstillhere.
After posting her statement, many of Sajat’s followers came to her defence saying that the individuals who started the rumours are wasting their time since she’s no longer living in Malaysia. We have to agree that even though she left the country, there are still those who just can’t get enough of her.
