The last thing anyone would want is another “basikal lajak” case which took 8 lives and left 8 others injured. Many have expressed their concerns whenever cyclists ride their bikes on a busy road, fearing that history might repeat itself.
While this recent episode may not have been a major accident, it still scared nearby road users when a car suddenly collided with a schoolgirl on her bicycle. Here’s what happened:

Earlier on Friday (11th August), a video was posted on the @mynewshub Twitter page that showed a road accident involving a car and a schoolgirl on a bicycle. In the dashcam recording, a white Perodua Alza was seen exiting a junction when suddenly a student riding her bicycle appeared right in front of it.
The vehicle collided with the cyclist but instead of hitting the brakes, the driver (possibly panicking) sped up, almost killing the student before the car hit the divider on the road. Thankfully, the young girl didn’t appeared to have sustained any serious injuries as she stood up almost immediately after the accident. Her schoolmates as well as other passersby quickly gathered at the scene to make sure everyone was alright.
The video went viral and sparked a heated debate among netizens on who was at fault for the accident. Most agreed that the schoolgirl was the one to blame for the accident as she was cycling against traffic before getting hit by the car while others argued that the Alza driver should’ve hit the brakes immediately after colliding with the cyclist.

Some remained unbiased saying both parties were at fault, judging from their panicked reactions and lack of awareness of each other’s presence. A few speculated that the accident occurred somewhere in Pontian, Johor. At the time of writing, there has been no update on what happened next.
Let’s hope that both the driver and the student learned from this incident to be more careful while on the road.
