After the horrifying ‘basikal lajak’ case that shook the nation, many have expressed their fear of seeing cyclists riding their bicycles on the road. Unless there are escorts or designated paths for cyclists to ensure your safety, perhaps it’s better to take public transportation than ride your bike to work.

However, some cyclists raised a lot of concern for drivers and everyone’s safety after they were spotted riding their bikes on a busy road. Here’s what happened:

A netizen who goes by @myjoe_ posted a video on Twitter, posted a recent incident he witnessed on the road yesterday (Thursday, 4th May). In the 12-second clip, a group of cyclists can be seen riding their bikes in the middle of a busy road. “I don’t know what to say if they don’t win Gold medals at the Olympics. At some point, they blocked an entire path,” the netizen tweeted.

The Twitter user did not specify where exactly this incident took place but judging from the road signs, we can assume that it happened somewhere in Kuala Lumpur as the vehicles, and cyclists were heading toward Ampang and Hulu Kelang. Regardless of location, the viral post caused many to be concerned for everyone’s safety on the road.

Netizens condemned the actions of these cyclists as they not only endangered the nearby drivers and riders on the road but also themselves if they weren’t careful. Some tagged the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) in hopes that they’ll look into the matter.

At the time of writing, there has been no update from the authorities regarding the situation. For your information, riding a bicycle on the highway is actually not illegal in Malaysia as long as the cyclists follow the traffic rules. According to Rule 35 (2) and Rule 35 (3) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, bicycles must have front and rear lights installed that can be seen within a reasonable distance.

Rule 42 (1) stated that no one can ride a bicycle on the road unless it is equipped with brakes that operate separately on both tyres and have bells. Whether you’re driving a car or riding a bike, it is always important to stay vigilant when you’re on the road.
