Despite what Hollywood tells you, America isn’t exactly for the faint of heart. From theft to violent crimes, there is no shortage of weird or messed-up things happening in the US of A. Case in point: two thieves in California recently tried to steal an ATM using a forklift.
The incident happened on Watt Avenue near Margaret Way on Wednesday, 9th August. Two suspects approached the sole ATM, both of them in separate vehicles, one in a pickup truck and another in a forklift.
The two suspects wasted no time, with the forklift driver quickly ramming the ATM and dislodging the machine from the raised platform. As the forklift operator was getting ready to toss the ATM into the bed of the pickup truck, another car passed by – the occupants witnessed the robbery, before immediately driving away.
Without a moment to lose, the truck driver immediately drove off with the “stolen goods”. However, in the midst of their hasty getaway, they were unable to tie the machine down, causing it to flip and fall off the truck. In a panic, the bumbling robbers simply abandoned the large machine on the busy road. Unfortunately, an unsuspecting driver crashed his car into the stray ATM some time later – but he was reportedly unharmed.
Police officers attempting to track the robbers down eventually discovered the forklift, also abandoned, further down the road. They suspect that the failed crooks tried to bring the forklift along for the ride, but it had to be left behind in order for them to escape and tie up all loose ends.
The police and FBI are still looking for the suspects who remain at large. As for the motorist who crashed into the ATM, he disclosed that, despite the crash taking place after sundown, his car suffered only minor frontal collision damage. According to him, “It was just something you don’t expect every day.”
