Malaysian Muslims have always been critical of local celebrities who don’t portray modest images, like Sharifah Sakinah and Kak KM. Recently, singer Masya Masyitah shocked netizens after sharing photos of herself no longer sporting a hijab – and after staying silent on the issue, the 23-year-old has finally spoken up.
During a recent Instagram live stream, the “Halimunan” singer was asked by netizens why she decided to go “free hair” and stop wearing her hijab. The vocalist says that removing her hijab was her own choice, adding that no one had forced her to do so. She also said, “If you want to be mad at anyone (for this issue), be mad at me. Don’t say that my mum was the one who encouraged it, and don’t blame my parents (for my action).”

She also spoke about the hate comments and criticism she has received, saying that most comments come from those who don’t have well-intentions and are waiting to see celebrities mess up. In the same live stream, many commenters also asked about the young singer’s career and future shows, to which she replied that she no longer wishes to be a singer.
According to Masya, she wants to live freely and no longer wants to be an artist or a part of the world of glamour. She also shared that she had rejected many job opportunities, saying she wants to rest from singing and performing. When asked about her plans, the 23-year-old said she wants to be a businesswoman but did not comment any further.
We hope that netizens will tone down their criticisms towards celebrities. As for Masya, we hope she can find happiness in whatever she chooses to do. You can watch a recording of the Instagram live stream below:
